Climate Savers Computing Initiative
posted June 13th, 2007 by J.D. Hodges
Yesterday Google announced their involvement in the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI).
CSCI is a nonprofit group whose participants are working to reduce power usage by increasing efficiency in computing products.
Google is in good company with Intel, AMD, Dell, EDS, EPA, HP, IBM, Lenovo, Microsoft, the World Wildlife Fund, and more than 20 other companies joining in. It will be interesting to see how effective these heavyweight tech companies are in reducing the energy usage of their products.
It seems to be a win-win situation for both the producers themselves, commercial customers as well as individual consumers. Lower energy bills and less pollution from electrical generation is good news for everyone.
However, the initiative is focused entirely on the tip of the iceberg; Absent is any recognition of the simple fact that that some 75% of the eco-footprint of a computer occurs during production and distribution, long before a user turns it on for the first time.Bookmark/Search this post with:
